John Umphrey

John began photography in his 20’s traveling across the country with his camera and a backpack following various rock artists. Two of his photos were recognized by the Smithsonian Book of Rock and Roll. It was apparent John had a talent and when he returned to Hawai'i settling on the Big Island, his interest grew to the beauty of the island, focusing on landscapes and volcanos. He hiked into treacherous terrain to capture unforgettable photos of Kilauea in times of unrest, while lava destroyed two subdivisions in the Puna district.

John continued his passion for photography until his passing in 2023. His webpage is our way of letting him know that his work will never be forgotten .
